I learned this the hard way, and it cost me my biggest client. Let me share how that painful experience led me to build a system that will protect you from this trap.

How I Lost a Client I Worked So Hard to Earn

Years ago, at one of my first trade shows, I met a French buyer. After months of follow-up, he placed his first order with me—200 units. For someone like me, just starting out in the industry, it felt like winning the lottery. I was thrilled, and I worked tirelessly to ensure everything was delivered perfectly and on time.

After receiving the goods, he started paying more attention to me—my attitude, responsibility, and consistency. Slowly, trust grew, and then came the second, third, and fourth orders.

But then, the real test came. He was bidding on a major project and needed my best quote. I was fully focused on supporting him. Before sending anything out, I asked my boss several times:

“Are you sure we can do this price?”
“Yes. Absolutely. Go ahead and quote it.”

The Price Hike That Cost Me a Client

That night, I worked until 2 a.m. perfecting the quote. I sent it out and finally got some rest. The next morning, I woke up to the great news: My first big order ever! I was beyond excited.

But when I brought the good news and the deposit to my boss, he didn’t celebrate. Instead, he said:

“Material prices went up. Tell the client we need to raise the price.”

I froze.

“I confirmed the price with you multiple times! We’ve got the deposit now, we need to find a better solution!”

The Pain of Losing Trust

As a salesperson with no decision-making power, I found myself stuck between my boss and my client. It was a terrible feeling.

The client reluctantly accepted the price increase, and the order went through, but the trust was gone. That French client, who had once placed multiple orders with me, never contacted me again.

I didn’t just lose a big customer. That night, I cried over the dishonesty I had been forced to deliver.

My Wake-Up Call: The Importance of Integrity

That experience stayed with me like a thorn. It taught me a valuable lesson:

Clients attracted by low prices are not partners—they’re prey. And any profit earned by sacrificing integrity will eventually cost you far more.

That’s why, when I co-founded Infinite Panda, I made honesty the foundation of everything we do. We vowed never to play that ugly game again—not with ourselves, nor with any of our partners.

I read it once… then twice… It warmed my entire morning.
